For a long time, the Korean scientific community resisted engaging with creationists for fear of giving the movement more credibility. But silence is no any longer an option.

The STR has been fighting to remove evolution-related content from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. This is only one aspect of the evolution of the development paradigm.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a branch of science that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living organisms adjust to their environment, which could result in changes to genes or entire genomes. These changes can over many generations lead to the creation of new species. The prevailing theory of evolution is called natural selection, which describes the process by which those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more often than those with disadvantages. Over time, this differential reproduction may lead to the development of entirely new species.

The term "evolution" is derived from Latin for revealing or unrolling has been used in many different ways as the concept has changed, both in science and in other fields. Some early evolutionists, like Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species evolved into new species in a predetermined fashion. The term transmutation was coined by Lamarck's student, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.

In recent years, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living things develop characteristics that enhance their chances of survival or ability to reproduce offspring. In time the genetic variability could lead to the emergence of entirely new physical or biological functions in the same population. The change in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and it drives most evolutionary change. Other changes that aren't genetic, such as an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, can't be considered to be evolutionary because they don't pass on to future generations.

Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial even though it has been proven to be valid by a multitude of scientific tests and that it has been tested over time. They argue that the concept should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have won a few victories in their efforts to eliminate evolution from high school textbooks which includes the removal of any mention of the evolutionary roots of humans and the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur believed to be an ancestor of birds.

Why is Evolution Important?

Evolution explains the origins of Earth and all living species. It is also one of the pillars of biology, and aids scientists discover how living things operate and grow. Evolution also shows how various species are interconnected. Scientists study evolution to better comprehend nature and make valuable discoveries, such as the development of new drugs.

The evidence for evolution of biological species is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that can explain so many aspects of the universe and life on this planet and has been thoroughly tested and confirmed over many years. Many people, and even religious leaders, are in favor of the scientific theory. It is essential to remember that evolutionary biology isn't in conflict with religious beliefs as it only deals with physical objects, events, and processes.

In reality many religious people have discovered ways to reconcile their beliefs with evolution. Some Christians for instance believe that God created everything through evolution and that humans share an ancestral connection to other animals.

It is important that science educators advocate for the teaching evolution. In some nations around the world there is a growing anti-evolutionist sentiment. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit teaching evolution. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research is pushing for the removal of textbook content on the evolution of horses and the Avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.

It is important to remember that the evidence in favor of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a broad range of sources, including fossils, genetic studies and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently verify the evidence.

The most popular type of creationist is the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in exactly the way described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of six days of creation was literal and that the universe and the life on Earth were created just recently.

OECs are less well known however they are just as passionate about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions of years old and believe that evolution is a myth.

Both forms of creationism reject the notion that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origins of life on Earth. They claim that evolution is impossible because it requires the creation of a miracle, and the founders of modern science eschewed miracles for fear that they would lose credibility.

What is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of creationism typically think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high-school textbooks announced last week that they would remove the mention of evolution in their editions. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. The STR has scored its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, called the Archeopteryx. The next goal is to remove the finch-research of Darwin's famed as well as on human evolution.

STR claims that it has the support of around 4,000 families and individuals. Its mission, it states, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays an unflattering image for students. It also aims to counteract the influence of American creationists who live in the US. A survey of trainee biology teachers revealed that around half do not believe in evolution. The root causes are unclear however, they could be related to religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists across the country.

The KACR has achieved a lot through its lectures and seminars in the past. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and the book. One of them is a textbook on the natural sciences, with an orthodox creationist perspective, which sparked interest in college communities. In 1991 the year 1991, a minister and professor started teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught until today.

On August 6-7 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to an audience of several thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given lectures on creation science in major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
